The Philippine cybersecurity landscape is experiencing rapid growth, creating both opportunities and challenges.

Nexus Orion, a division of Nexus Technologies, Inc., is navigating this dynamic environment with a unique approach to managed security services and talent development.

Addressing a common misconception, Edmund Milanes, head of Nexus Orion Managed Services, clarifies, “Nexus Orion is just a branding under Nexus. We created the branding so that it’s easy to remember, to differentiate from other managed services groups.”

This strategic branding has successfully positioned Nexus Orion as a leading provider of managed security services within the Philippines.

Addressing the SOC Shortage in Cybersecurity

Nexus Orion’s specialization lies in cybersecurity, a critical area given the increasing sophistication of cyber threats.

“There are two emerging areas in information technology right now: AI and cybersecurity,” Milanes explains. “And in cybersecurity, a lot are trying to set up their own SOC (Security Operations Center).”

Establishing and maintaining a functional SOC presents significant hurdles for many organizations.

“What makes it difficult is the talent, the people capable of building it,” Milanes points out. “Then there’s the technology and processes that come into play, as well; it’s a complex cycle.” This complexity creates a significant market need, which Nexus Orion is effectively addressing.

“Even the largest companies don’t necessarily have their own SOC,” he adds, emphasizing the scale of the challenge and the opportunity for specialized service providers.

    Homegrown Talent: A Worthwhile Investment

Nexus Orion’s unique approach to talent acquisition and development is a key differentiator.

“Seventy to 80 percent of our people are homegrown,” Milanes proudly states. Rather than solely relying on experienced hires, their strategy focuses on training those new in the field and fresh graduates.

“It’s easier to teach a fresh mind because they are hungry for more knowledge,” he explains.

This long-term investment, initiated six years ago, has cultivated a highly skilled and motivated team. “We are one of the few who started this, and we are known locally as the one with the best programs in developing people in terms of cybersecurity,” Milanes asserts, highlighting their commitment to nurturing talent.

Commitment to Training, No Matter the Cost

The company’s commitment to training is especially significant given the high cost and complexity of cybersecurity education.

“The training for cybersecurity is really expensive,” Milanes admits, “and it’s constantly evolving, with so many fields.”

Despite the substantial investment, Nexus Orion recognizes the long-term benefits. “It’s still better in the long term that you train your own people rather than compete for scarce talent,” he emphasizes.

This proactive approach ensures a steady stream of skilled professionals, mitigating the industry-wide talent shortage.

    Ready for the Growing Demand

The demand for Nexus Orion’s services is substantial and continues to grow. “Right now, the demand is very huge,” Milanes confirms.

“Even with a workforce of more than 100, we cannot provide for everything. We have to save, rather than taking in everything for the sake of money.”

This underscores the significant gap in the market and the growing need for skilled cybersecurity professionals in the Philippines.

Their commitment to both service delivery and talent development positions them as a key player in the ongoing evolution of Philippine cybersecurity.
