Apple has chosen Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence technology as the basis for the next generation of its Apple Foundation Models as it moves to enhance Siri and other Apple Intelligence features.

In a joint statement published last January 12, Apple and Google said they have entered a multi-year collaboration under which Apple’s future AI models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology.

Apple said it selected Google after an extensive evaluation process, concluding that Google’s AI technology provides the “most capable foundation” for its next-generation models.

The company added that the collaboration would unlock new experiences for Apple users without compromising its long-standing focus on user privacy.

Despite relying on Google’s AI models, Apple stressed that Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, maintaining what it described as industry-leading privacy standards.

The partnership builds on the long-standing commercial ties between the two companies, particularly in search.

Google has for years paid Apple billions of dollars annually to remain the default search engine on Apple’s Safari browser, an arrangement that has drawn regulatory scrutiny in the United States and underscored the complex relationship between two tech giants.
