Smart device company HONOR has entered a strategic technical partnership with ARRI to bring professional cinema imaging technology to future consumer devices, including smartphones.

The collaboration aims to integrate elements of ARRI’s Image Science, the technology behind the color rendering and visual quality used in many Hollywood productions, into HONOR’s next-generation mobile imaging systems.

By combining HONOR’s mobile hardware and software capabilities with ARRI’s expertise in cinematic imaging, the companies aim to give content creators tools that produce more natural color, improved highlight control, and visuals closer to what professional filmmakers achieve using dedicated cinema cameras.

“HONOR is pioneering a new era of mobile imaging, where technology exists to inspire creativity and storytelling,” said James Li, CEO of HONOR. “ARRI has defined the visual language of cinema for generations. Through this collaboration, we are bringing those cinematic standards and professional workflows into mobile imaging, enabling creators to craft stories with greater authenticity and emotional depth.”

Founded in 1917, ARRI has spent more than a century shaping how films are shot and produced. Its cameras and imaging systems have been used across major productions worldwide, and the company has received 20 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for its contributions to filmmaking technology.

“Today, consumer smartphones have already become a serious tool in professional filmmaking, being used on blockbusters across the globe,” said David Bermbach, managing director at ARRI. “For the first time ever, core elements of ARRI Image Science are being integrated directly into a consumer device.”

Dr. Benedikt von Lindeiner, VP at ARRI responsible for the technical collaboration, said the challenge is adapting cinema imaging principles to smartphones, which have smaller sensors and more compact hardware.

The first device featuring the joint technology is expected to debut later this year in the upcoming HONOR ROBOT PHONE.
