Music streaming platform Spotify is restoring its original app logo after a temporary disco ball redesign triggered criticism and mockery across social media.

Earlier this week, users noticed Spotify had replaced its familiar green icon with a glittery disco ball version featuring the platform’s signature soundwave symbol. The redesign was later revealed to be part of Spotify’s “Spotify 20” anniversary campaign celebrating the company’s 20th year.

The campaign, titled “Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s),” allows users to revisit their listening history, including their first streamed song, top artists and most-played tracks over the years. The disco ball branding was meant to match the nostalgia and party theme tied to the anniversary celebration.

However, the logo quickly drew backlash online. One user on X said the icon looked like “someone threw it in Apple AI and just put the Spotify logo on it,” adding that “they could have done better.”

Another viral post from commentary account PopPulse called the redesign “rubbish” and “a downgrade.”

Another user wrote that “whoever at Spotify thought it was a good idea to use this new logo should be fired and sent straight to prison,” reflecting the exaggerated but widespread frustration shared across social media.

Users also compared the icon to a nightclub app, karaoke software, and a Christmas ornament rather than a music streaming platform.

Spotify later acknowledged the criticism in a post on X, saying they know “Glitter is not for everyone.”

“Our temp glow up ends soon. Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon returns next week,” the company wrote as a reply on X.
