Borrow before you buy: My experience with the Canon EOS R System Loan Programme

As a hobbyist who has been using Fujifilm cameras for quite a while, I was excited to try something new with Canon’s EOS R System Loan Programme.

What stood out to me about the program was how easy and hassle-free it was. The process was simple: all I had to do was sign up, use the camera for a set period, and then provide feedback online.

There were no hidden fees or commitments, making it a great way to try out new gear without worrying about spending money. It was refreshing to experience a loan program that felt so straightforward and transparent.

For my trial, I received the Canon EOS R50 body along with the RF 18-45mm lens. To be honest, I was a bit nervous about switching from my Fujifilm setup, but once I got the camera in my hands, I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to adjust. The EOS R50 felt comfortable and natural to hold. Even though I was used to the unique controls and film simulations on my Fujifilm cameras, I quickly got the hang of Canon’s layout and menu system. It was intuitive, making the transition much smoother than I had anticipated.

One of the first things I noticed was how lightweight and compact the EOS R50 was. I’ve used some mirrorless cameras before that felt a bit bulky, so I really appreciated how easy this one was to carry around. The camera wasn’t heavy, and I barely noticed it in my bag. Over the course of 10 days, I took it everywhere—whether on my daily commute, at outdoor gatherings, or capturing moments in indoor settings. The EOS R50’s portability made it the perfect companion for all these occasions, and I never felt like I was lugging around something too heavy.

When it came to image quality, I was impressed. The EOS R50 features a 24.2MP APS-C sensor, and the photos were sharp, vibrant, and detailed. Whether I was photographing city streets, nature, or casual portraits, the images came out looking great with minimal editing. I found the colors to be well-balanced and the details crisp, even in tricky lighting situations. The autofocus was another standout feature—it was quick, precise, and especially reliable when capturing moving subjects. This made it easy for me to take candid street photos or snap spontaneous shots, which I really enjoyed.

Durability also impressed me. I used the camera daily, taking it everywhere, and I expected it to show signs of wear. But even after all that use, it still looked as good as new. There were no scratches or signs of damage, which gave me confidence in the build quality of the EOS R50. For someone like me, who isn’t a professional photographer but uses their camera frequently, that’s really important—I want something that will hold up to regular use without looking worn out.

The vari-angle LCD touchscreen was another feature I ended up using more than I expected. At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d need it much, but once I started shooting in crowded places or experimenting with different angles, I found it incredibly useful. Being able to adjust the screen and shoot from higher or lower perspectives without awkward positioning made a big difference, and I found myself using it regularly.

I used my laptop to create a cute background for this.

Looking back on my time with the Canon EOS R50, I found myself seriously considering it as an addition to my camera collection. As a hobbyist, I love my Fujifilm gear for its color science and aesthetic, but Canon’s camera made me realize how much I appreciate good autofocus, ease of use, and image quality—all things I’d get with the EOS R50. Being able to test it in real-world conditions made it clear that this is a solid, reliable camera for anyone looking for something lightweight, portable, and versatile.

    Raw photos, no edit.

For anyone who enjoys photography as a hobby or wants a camera that’s easy to carry around without sacrificing performance, the EOS R50 is a great option.

The Canon EOS R System Loan Programme gave me a chance to try this camera with no commitment, and now I’m seriously considering adding it to my setup. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a compact yet capable daily camera, the EOS R50 is definitely worth considering.
