The Oppo A60 smartphone began selling in the Philippines last June 7. Oppo claims that this is the strongest member of its A series, saying that it passed the MIL-STD 810 military grade shock resistance test.
The tests are done in military shock labs to make sure that it can withstand any incident, from accidental drops to weathering tests.
The unit seeded to PhilSTAR Tech was the Ripple Blue variant. Similar to the Oppo Reno 11F 5G design, the Oppo A60 displays a glimmering ocean waves back panel. It has a 6.6-inch LCD display and a KK6 cover glass. It’s a decent screen because its brightness reaches up to 970 nits.
It’s a device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 with 8 CPU speed cores and an Adreno 610 GPU. It’s an old chipset, by today’s standards, but it is still suitable for daily use cases such as for internet browsing and other media consumption. Since this is an older system-on-a-chip, the device only supports up to 4G connectivity.
Just like the trials of Hercules, we have subjected the OPPO A60 to a series of tests to prove (or disprove?) its worthiness.
1. Falling from a table
First of the five tests is to see whether it would survive a fall from four-feet tall table or not. We thought that if it could withstand the impact from this, it could survive the following tests.
As one can see from the video, it fell flat–screen first–on the floor, but neither scratch nor dent is seen on the screen. Drop tests are to ensure a device’s survivability. It can be simulation of what would happen if you accidentally dropped your phone. Results, of course, may vary due to heights or angles taken to test it. On that note, we placed the A60 from a higher point to see if there would a different result.
2. Falling off the hand of your six-footer friend
For this test, we needed our six-footer friend to see if a change in height would do a change. If you’re above five feet and considering the Oppo A60, watch this video to see if it could survive a fall from your hand.
This time, two feet higher, not one scratch has appeared on the screen. No dents as well. Notably, even after being dropped twice the phone was still working fine.
3. Getting punched
It is not normal to punch a phone, but can the Oppo A60 survive a blow as tough as a human’s punch? We wanted to see the answer to that question, so we added that to our list of tests.
This time, however, we used the back of the phone for the test. One punch is all we needed for this test.
It seemed to us that the A60 would not budge. The back panel remained flat with no dents.
4. Being used as a chopping knife for a cochinillo
Although we don’t usually use phones as kitchen tools, it could also be useful to test Oppo A60’s integrity by using it as such.
For this test, we had a newly-cooked cochinillo for a demonstration and the device as a chopping knife. Since this is a budget phone, it’s made of plastic. We kind of expected that it’s going to bear some scratches after the activity.
The unit came out unscathed. Despite using it to slice through the crisp skin of the cochinillo, it did not gain any scratch or dent.
Note well: We would like to caution readers that these tests were done under controlled environments, more as a marketing spectacle in the presence of OPPO executives to show off the durability features. We would urge people who intend to buy this phone to not subject the A60 to such tests. They are just meant to show how tough the phone is from accidental dropping or damage.
5. 13 hours of continuous use
Initially, we wanted to see if it would last for 16 hours. We began the test in the morning by downloading games and other resources. From having a full charge of 100 percent at 11:00 a.m, it slid down to 87% percent by 1:00 p.m.
By that time, we’ve begun playing Mobile Legends with the HD Mode turned off, medium graphics but with high frame rate. At 5:30 p.m, the battery was drained to 37 percent.
The gaming experience was not entirely a smooth one. Due to its chipset, we already expected that it’s going to lag from time to time. However, it still worked fine. You just have to find the right mobile games for it, most probably games that are not heavy in graphics.
After that, we went straight to stream a movie at 1080P. We watched Dune (2021) and ended with 21 percent by 8:00 p.m.
Finally, we decided to spend the last hours of the day scrolling through social media applications and ended with two percent by 11:58 p.m.
The device was marketed as a military-grade budget phone that is suitable for daily use cases, especially for jobs that require the aid of mobile devices.
So, for people with jobs that require more than eight hours of their attention,this might come handy as a work phone. The 5000mAh battery of the device is energy-efficient, and can easily charge up to 50 percent within 30 minutes.
Again, we do not want you to try the drop, punch, and chop tests at home. We already did these tests for you so you won’t have to. What we hope to achieve through these tests is for you to know how tough this military-grade phone is. Of course, the Oppo A60 won’t be 100 percent unbreakable. It all depends on how you take good care of it.
So, just like any other gadget or device that you own, feel free to gear it up with protections such as screen protectors and a durable phone case with a bumper. This way it won’t just be a tough phone to break, but a phone that would last years.
