Aguda says focus remains on duties amid resignation reports

Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda said he remains focused on his duties amid reports of his resignation, stressing that he serves at the pleasure of the President.

In a statement on Oct. 7, Aguda acknowledged circulating reports about his position but did not directly confirm or deny that he had submitted his resignation.

Malacañang, however, said Aguda remains DICT secretary. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro addressed the reports during a briefing in Singapore.

“At this time, I remain focused on carrying out my responsibilities and ensuring the continuity of the Department’s work,” Aguda said.

The DICT chief added that he respects the President’s prerogative in matters concerning the Cabinet and the administration.

His statement came after the government’s temporary blocking of Discord drew criticism and a legal challenge from technology professionals and digital rights advocates.

Access to the platform was blocked on Sept. 23 following a government demand for a local representative. Authorities soon lifted the restriction the next day, after discussions with Discord, whose officials committed to cooperate on online child safety measures.

On Oct. 1, five technology professionals backed by civic technology group BetterGov.PH filed a Supreme Court petition challenging the blocking orders.

The petition named Aguda, Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center Executive Director Renato Paraiso and National Telecommunications Commission Commissioner Ella Blanca Lopez as respondents.

The petitioners argued that the agencies exceeded their authority and asked the court to prevent similar nationwide restrictions on online platforms.

In his statement, Aguda also emphasized DICT’s regional commitments as the Philippines hosts ASEAN this year, including the ASEAN AI MSME event this week.

“My focus remains on carrying out my responsibilities and serving the Filipino people to the best of my ability,” he said.
