Review: Samsung Galaxy A27 5G knows its way around gaming

Samsung’s Galaxy A27 5G makes a surprisingly strong case for itself as a gaming-capable midrange phone. With a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chipset, a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, and Samsung’s long history of optimizing Galaxy devices for mobile games, the A27 delivers more gaming performance than its specifications might suggest.

For competitive games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Call of Duty: Mobile, and PUBG Mobile, the A27 handles itself well. I played Mobile Legends at high graphics, while Call of Duty: Mobile was set to high graphics with the frame rate at its maximum available option. PUBG Mobile was tested at balanced graphics with the frame rate set to extreme. Across these games, the A27 remained comfortably playable with minimal heat during normal sessions.

The more interesting test, however, was Fortnite.

As a Fortnite gamer myself, I was particularly interested in seeing how the A27 would handle Epic Games’ notoriously demanding battle royale. Fortnite can be difficult for even gaming-focused phones to run smoothly, making it a good test of what the A27 can actually do.

The game allows the A27 to select a 120 FPS setting, but the hardware cannot realistically sustain that target. Once landed on the map, gameplay generally sits around 40–60 FPS, while dropping into the map can bring performance down to around 20 FPS as the phone handles the game’s heavy loading and rendering demands.

Despite that, Fortnite remains playable. It is certainly not the smoothest experience available, but considering the A27’s midrange hardware, the result is impressive. This is where Samsung’s game optimization becomes particularly interesting.

Samsung has worked with Epic Games on Fortnite since 2018, collaborating on areas including performance profiling, Vulkan optimization, GPU and driver work, and Unreal Engine improvements. Samsung has also worked with Tencent’s game teams, including those behind titles such as Call of Duty: Mobile, on performance optimization technologies, including its SceneSDK. Its broader Galaxy GameDev program works with more than 50 partners across the gaming industry.

These collaborations do not mean every frame on the A27 can be attributed to Samsung’s optimization work, but they show that the company has invested heavily in making Galaxy devices work better with demanding games. In the A27’s case, that optimization helps its hardware punch above its weight.

There are limits, however. Extended gaming sessions can make the phone noticeably toasty. Shorter sessions of competitive games are not much of a concern, but anyone planning to spend several hours playing demanding titles should expect the temperature to rise.

Outside gaming, the A27 offers a familiar Samsung experience. Its 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display runs at 120Hz, with the new Infinity-O design and a reduced 3.5mm bottom bezel. The combination makes the display well-suited for gaming, video, and everyday browsing.

The camera setup consists of a 50MP main camera with OIS, a 5MP ultrawide, and a 2MP macro camera, alongside a 12MP HDR selfie camera. The main camera gets the most capable hardware, although the ultrawide is actually a step down in resolution from the A26’s 8MP sensor.

Samsung also brings its AI features to the A27. Object Eraser has been improved, while Circle to Search supports multi-product searches and virtual try-on. Voice recordings can also be transcribed and translated into text.

The A27 is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and 25W charging, giving it the capacity expected from a modern midrange phone. Samsung also promises six generations of Android OS upgrades and six years of security updates, along with Knox Vault protection. That long-term support could be one of the phone’s biggest advantages for buyers who plan to keep it for years.

At ₱18,990 for 6GB/128GB and ₱21,990 for 8GB/256GB, the Galaxy A27 5G sits in a competitive segment. It does not have the most powerful chipset or fastest charging in its class, but it offers a balanced package with a strong display, capable gaming performance, useful AI features, and unusually long software support.

The Galaxy A27 5G isn’t trying to be a dedicated gaming phone. Instead, it offers something more practical: a well-rounded Samsung phone that happens to be surprisingly good at gaming. For competitive players, it has enough power to deliver a smooth experience at sensible settings. For heavier gamers, the heat and limitations of its midrange hardware will eventually show. But for its class, the A27 makes a convincing case that good optimization can sometimes matter just as much as raw specifications.
